bullet   Another name for Sarah was Sally.1

picture

bullet  Noted events in her life were:

1. Census: 1820, Barren County, Kentucky. 7

Household of John King: Presumed to be one of the females age 10-16.

2. Census: 1830, Barren County, Kentucky. 8

Household of John King: ???

[Since Sarah did not marry until 1833, one would expect to find her in the 1830 household of John King, but there is no female enumerated in the 20-30 age range. It's possible Ann was married by the date of the census and that Sarah was mistakenly put in the 15-20 age bracket instead of the 20-30 age bracket.]

3. Census: 1850, Cole County, Missouri. 5

Household of Samuel Legg: Sarah Legg, age 44, female, born in Virginia.

4. Slave Schedule: 1850, Cole County, Missouri. 9

Sarah Jane:
No. 1, age 50, female, black
No. 2, age 46, female, mulatto

[This entry follows that for Samuel Legg and thus is presumed to be for Sarah Jane Legg. Although Sarah inherited slaves Sarah and Granville from her father upon his death in 1842, it does not appear they were transported from Kentucky to Missouri. Estate records for John King, Dec'd, indicate an in-lieu cash payment was made instead, which may have been used to acquire the above slaves.]

5. Deed: 1857, Cole County, Missouri. 10

Dated 2 Sep 1857, Filed 3 Feb 1858, Bk M:251
Wm Scott and Elizabeth his wife to Sarah J. Legg; $300 for the SE1/4 of the SE1/4 of Sec. 29, Twp. 44N, Range 13W [containing 40 acres]. Deed acknowledged before James W. Legg, J. P.

6. Census: 1860, Cole County, Missouri. 11

Dwelling 316, Family 319
Sally Legg, age 54, female, farmer, $250 real property, $1500 personal property, born in Virginia, cannot read or write.
Polly Legg, age 12, female, born in Missouri.

Dwelling 316, Family 320
Eli Strong, age 27, male, laborer, $175 personal property, born in Illinois, married within the year.
Elizabeth Strong, age 21, female, born in Missouri, married within the year.

7. Slave Schedule: 1860, Cole County, Missouri. 12

Sally Legg:
No. 1, age 36, H for sex, SB for color
No. 2, age 30, male, SB for color

[Note these are not the same slaves as appeared in the 1850 schedule.]

8. Deed: 1863, Moniteau County, Missouri. 13

Dated 20 Jul 1863, Filed 20 Aug 1863, Bk I:305
Sarah J. Legg to Eli Strong and Elizabeth K. Strong his wife, all of Moniteau Co.; $80 for the interest of John R. Barry in the SW1/4 of the NW1/4 and the SE1/4 of the NW1/4 [and the SE1/4 of the NW1/4 -- repeated in error] and the NW1/4 of the NW1/4 of Sec. 16, Twp. 44, Range 16, containing about 120 acres.

[This deed should be considered in connection with a deed by S. H. Legg, the Administrator for the Estate of Marcelmus Barry, Dec'd, the brother of John R. Barry, to Eli Strong. See Events for Eli Strong. These two deeds describe the same property, suggesting the property was owned by both Marcelmus and John R. Barry. Query by what authority Sarah, who was the mother of both Marcelmus and John as well as the mother of Elizabeth K. Strong, conveyed John's interest. S. H. Legg, the Administrator of Marcelmus' Estate, was a stepson of Sarah's.]

9. Deed: 1864, Cole County, Missouri. 14

Dated 20 Feb 1864, Filed 4 Apr 1864, Bk Q:8
Sarah J. Legg of Moniteau County to Eli Zumwalt of Cole County; $200 for the SE1/4 of the SE1/4 of Sec. 29, Twp. 44, Range 13.

Dated 24 Feb 1864, Filed 3 May 1864, Bk Q:52
Eli Zumwalt and Mary Ann his wife of Cole County to Sarah J. Legg of Moniteau County; $150 for the SE1/4 of the SE1/4 of Sec. 29, Twp. 44, Range 13.

[The latter deed was given as security for Zumwalt's promissory note of $150 payable to Sarah Legg as Guardian for Polly Legg, i.e., it was the equivalent of a mortgage for the balance of the purchase price per the former deed. Query whether the property sold was part of Polly Legg's estate, or whether Sarah was just directing the payments be made to her estate.]

10. Census: 1880, Vernon County, Missouri. 6

Household of James Strong: Sarah Legg; white; female; age 73; mother-in-law; widowed; cannot write; born in Virginia; father born in Virginia; mother born in Virginia.
