Research Scope and Limitations

I have made a diligent effort to thoroughly research the public records for information about my direct line ancestors. Those who hunger for sources will find them here, along with extensive notes.

Those who are hoping for a huge database that may contain the name of their ancestor may be disappointed. This database has purposely been kept small since, in my opinion, size and being verifiable are inversely related. I have attempted, however, to include collateral descendants through the grandchildren of a common ancestor. When such information has been obtained from others and more information about that branch is available, I provide contact information for those who desire to further explore that branch.

I am not so presumptuous as to think I have made no errors. If any reader will provide evidence of such errors, I will make corrections. Note, however, the fact your information may differ from mine is not, in and of itself, evidence my information is in error. I take pride in my documentation and expect those who disagree with me to offer documentation in support of their position.

Surnames Subject to Ongoing Research

I will continue to add information to this site as my research progresses. I am currently working on the following lines: BOWERS, BRANSCOMB, FRANKLIN, FULLER, HENRY, HOWETH, LEAR/LAIR, LEFFEW, MAJORS, MCNATT and TANNER. Lines as to which I have barely scratched the surface include: ANDERSON (a second distinct line), BENSON, and PROCTOR.  Please check back every once in awhile for updates.

My Current Brick Walls

ANDERSON: Philip Anderson's earliest tracks are in Wilson County, Tennessee, where in 1806 he married Polly McNatt. He also appeared in an 1806 tax list for Wilson County, in the same tax district as a Robert Anderson. Were they brothers? Who were his parents and where was he born?

(ANDERSON), Martha: What is the maiden name of Martha, Richard Anderson's wife? Although she was born in Virginia, I expect her family lived in Lincoln County, Tennessee at the time of her marriage to Richard in the mid 1820's.

(BOWERS), Catherine: What is the maiden name of Catherine, Andrew Bower's (Sr.) wife?  My working theory is that she was a Campbell and that her family may have lived in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

FRANKLIN:  The earliest record for William Franklin and his wife Nancy is the 1796 tax list for Madison Co., KY.  Census records indicate some children were born in Virginia, the oldest in 1774.  Thus, I am looking for a William from Virginia, born in the early 1750s and married in the early 1770s.

HAMILTON:  The earliest record for Charles Hamilton is his Revolutionary War service record, which shows he enlisted in the Sixth South Carolina Regiment on 15 Apr 1776.  Though he enlisted in a South Carolina regiment, he probably resided near or just across the border in North Carolina, in present day Gaston County.  That is certainly where he resided after his marriage to Hannah Henry in Dec 1777.  I am looking for siblings and/or parents in this vicinity.

HENRY:  The earliest record for William Henry is his 1746 marriage to Hannah Tanner at Old Swede's Church in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.  Was he from Delaware?  Who were his parents and siblings?

LEAR:  The earliest record for John Lear, Sr. is a 1738 lease for land in Orange Co. (later Culpeper Co.), VA.  Was he the immigrant ancestor?

LEFEW/LEPHEW/LEFFEW:  The earliest record for Stephen Lefew is a 1779 warrant for a land grant in Guilford Co., NC.  Who were his parents?
