bullet  Research Notes:

Some researchers have identified Henry G. Strong as a son of Martin and Margaret (Scrivner) Strong. They appear to have confused Henry G. Strong with Harvey Strong, two different individuals as shown by the roster for the 9th Battalion Missouri Sharpshooters. Harvey was identified as a surviving son who lived in Arkansas in the obituaries for Martin and Margaret; per the 1850 census he was listed as H. Strong, born about 1839.

Although Henry is never enumerated by name in the household of Hiram and Rebecca Strong, other evidence is persuasive he was their oldest son: he fits their family profile in the 1840 census; while he does not appear with the family in the 1850 census, that was probably because he was old enough to be on his own; in the 1870 census he and his children are split between the households of Eli and James, probably because of the death of his wife; his son, James R. was presumably named after my James R. Strong; and finally, I have a photograph of a family picnic in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri, where Henry and his family then lived, which is inscribed on the back with the names of Polly Strong and her children and says the picnic was with a cousin -- it appears Henry's entire family, as it then existed, is pictured.

bullet  Birth Notes:

Census records and his obituary list various birth states: Tennessee, Illinois and Missouri. Missouri can be ruled out because younger siblings were born in Illinois.

bullet  Death Notes:

Obituary from The Weekly Post, Friday, 15 Nov 1907, Page 3, Col. 3:

"W. [sic] G. Strong age 78 years died at his home 810 South College street Monday night of old age.
He leaves a wife and four children[.] Mr. Strong was born in Cole county, Mo., in April 1829 and moved to Vernon in 1881. He and his family have resided in Nevada since last April.
Rev. E. F. Wright conducted the funeral services today at 12:30 o'clock. The remains were buried at Bearea, near Walker, Tuesday.
Deceased was a man of sterling character, loved and admired by all who knew him. A host of friends join his family in mourning his loss."

Per the above obituary, Henry died Monday, 11 Nov 1907, but his gravemarker shows the date of death as 9 Nov 1907. I favor the accuracy of the gravemarker over the obituary. Also, the obituary seems to indicate he was buried before the funeral service. Query.

8. Military Service: Abt 1861-1865, Missouri. 11 12

9th Battalion Missouri Sharpshooters, CSA
Strong, Henry, Co. A

At the Missouri State Archives' Soldiers Database, an H. G. Strong is shown to have been with Parson's Brigade Pindall's Battalion. The supporting record is the 8th annual meeting of Ex-Confederate Missourians in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri in 1890. Since Henry G. Strong lived in Vernon County, this record is presumed to be for him. Pindall's Sharpshooters and the 9th Battalion Missouri Sharpshooters were one and the same.

Pindall's Sharpshooters fought at Prairie Grove, Helena, Little Rock and Pleasant Hill as part of Parson's Brigade.

[Also in Co. A were Harvey Strong and Levi Strong, sons of Martin Strong. Jesse M. Strong, who hasn't been identified, was a 1st. Lt. in Co. B. Prior to the Sharpshooters, Jesse also served in Co. D of the 11th Missouri Volunteers Infantry, where James Riley Strong and Moses Strong served in Co. C.]

9. Census: 1870, Vernon County, Missouri. 13 14

Household of James Strong:
Henry Strong, age 40, male, born in Missouri
Hannah Strong, age 8, female, born in Missouri
Chas. Strong, age 2, male, born in Missouri

[Chas. may be a misidentification of James's daughter, Sarah, also age 2, who was otherwise omitted from the census. If not, then Chas. apparently died before the 1880 census. Note Henry's children, Sarah E., age 11, and Robert S., age 4, were enumerated in the household of Henry's brother, Eli, in Moniteau County, Missouri.]
