James L. Thompson and F. A. Thompson appear on the roster of Co. A of the 23rd Tennessee Infantry Batallion, also known as Newman's Battalion. Co. A was organized 10 March 1862 at Mulberry, Lincoln County, Tennessee and it was led by Captain W. P. Simpson. The 23rd was organized 29 Nov 1862, then was consolidated in 1863 with the 45th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, and finally formed part of the 4th Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment, which was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on 1 May 1865. What happened to James between 1865, when he was competent to serve as security for the bond of the Administrator for the Estate of Sarah Strong, Dec'd, and 1870, when he was designated idiotic? Where is daughter Tabitha?]
