  Research Notes:

The listing of Catherine as a child by John's unknown first wife is somewhat arbitrary, since we do not know how long after 1820 John's first wife died nor how long before 1830 John married Sarah. Since there is a natural spacing between Catherine, born 1821-1823, and Elizabeth, born 1827, I considered assigning all children born before Elizabeth to John's unknown first wife. However, Elizabeth stated in the 1880 census that her mother was born in North Carolina, suggesting, since Sarah was born in Tennessee, that John's unknown first wife was her mother. Accordingly, Elizabeth and all children born before her have been assigned to John's unknown first wife, while all children born after Elizabeth have been assigned to Sarah.
