bullet  Research Notes:

The family records of Mozell Haines identify Nancy's maiden name as Haines. They also identify her father as John Haynes, her mother as Margery Adams and Margery's father as Isaac Adams. I have attempted to reach Mozell Haines about resolving the conflict between his information and the marriage record, but to no avail. From the marriage record, one would presume Nancy's mother, Margaret, had been married to an Adams when Nancy was born, that said Adams had then died, and that Margaret had then married John Haynes. Alternatively, Margery may not have been married when Nancy was born. The odd thing about Mozell's records is that he shows seven Haines children mothered by Margery who were born prior to their marriage on 3 Oct 1822 (John had previously been married to Nancy Berry, 20 Dec 1817). Since no children are listed from his first marriage, I wonder if all the children have been listed under his marriage to Margery Adams. If so, then the seven children born before they married could be a mixture of her children by a prior marriage or her children born while she was unmarried and his children by his prior marriage. For certain, Nancy was born years before their marriage and even before his first marriage. Regardless of whether Margery was married when Nancy was born, it seems likely Nancy took on the Haines name for most purposes, the exception being when she got married, perhaps because of perceived legalities.

In this regard, note the Will of John Haynes, written 23 Feb 1868, proved 22 Jun 1868 (New Bk A:192-193). Nancy Lair is identified as a daughter. 2 3
