bullet  General Notes:

With the caveat that one must be somewhat wary of the recollections of Albert Slayton Anderson (see discussion in Notes for Richard Anderson and also see comment below), note the following per family records of John Q. Anderson:

"A. S. Anderson said that his Uncle John Anderson was a refined and fairly well educated man for his day. Uncle John had been a soldier stationed at Fort Smith, Arkansas, and had seen the good land west in Indian Territory. He went to Missouri [Arkansas?] and brought his family back and settled for a time near Wilburton. Eventually he returned to Missouri [Arkansas?] and never wrote. He was said to have family records."

"Columbus Anderson, son of Uncle John Anderson and Dad's [A. S. Anderson] cousin, lived for a time near Wilburton in Indian Territory. He also went back to Missouri [Arkansas?] to live."

"John Anderson was a Deputy U. S. Marshal in Indian Territory. One night several men rode up to his yard gate and called for him. When they would not come in, he walked toward the gate. A shot rang out, and he was badly wounded but was not killed. He never did know who the men were." [It appears Martha Esther (Anderson) Shinn was the source for the quote.]

[I suspect the references to Uncle John Anderson are at least in part references to John H. Anderson, son of John Anderson. Since John Anderson was the oldest son of Richard and Martha Anderson, perhaps John H. Anderson was considered more of an uncle by his younger cousins, such as A. S. Slayton. Columbus Anderson, aka Milburn Columbus Anderson, was a son of John H. Anderson. This is the line of LeRoy Anderson, who participated in the Anderson DNA Project on behalf of our Anderson line. His father was Milburn Columbus Anderson. LeRoy's e-mail address is lande38493@aol.com, should one desire more information about his line.]

Per family records of Helen Hill, John Anderson [which one?] was also a minister. 4 7

bullet  Research Notes:

There were two John Andersons in Lawrence Co., MO that have been confused with each other. The confusion is due to the fact only one John Anderson appears in the 1850 census for Lawrence Co., MO, that being the John Anderson who was the oldest son of Richard and Martha, and only one John Anderson appears in the 1860 census for Lawrence Co., MO. Some descendants of Richard and Martha Anderson, who are unaware that their son John moved to Sebastian Co., AR before 1860, assert that the 1860 Lawrence County John Anderson is the son of Richard and Martha. This assertion leads to the further assertion that John also married Delila Foster on 21 Aug 1851, for that is the listed wife for the 1860 Lawrence County John Anderson. But, obviously, Delila Foster could not have been the first wife if she is shown as the 1860 wife.

The 1860 Lawrence County John Anderson was John F(ranklin) Anderson. Just as some descendants of Richard and Martha thought the 1860 Lawrence County John Anderson was the oldest son of Richard and Martha, so did some descendants of John F. Anderson, primarily because Richard and Martha's John is the only John in the 1850 census for Lawrence County. Barbara Anderson Strang, a descendant of John F. Anderson, has been immensely helpful in sorting out these two John Andersons. It was the confirmation that Richard and Martha's son, John, had moved to Sebastian Co., AR before 1860, that convinced her John F. was not the son of Richard and Martha. (A coincidence that also seemed to connect Richard Anderson and John F. Anderson was that at Richard's estate sale in 1858, a blind horse was sold to John Anderson and in the 1888 estate inventory for John F. Anderson a blind horse appears. But, while horses do live for more than 30 years, I expect Richard's horse was already of an advanced age in 1858.) Although Barbara does not know who John F. Anderson's parents were, family records suggest a connection to Peyton Anderson of Lawrence County, but probably as a nephew and not as a son since Peyton had a son named John M. Anderson who married Matilda Gaw on 7 May 1863 in Lawrence County. Those interested in this line should contact Barbara Anderson Strang for more information. Her e-mail address is BARBSTRANG@aol.com. Her postal address is 6614 Ivy Hill Dr., McLean, VA 22101.

6. Deed: 1859, Lawrence County, Missouri. 12

8. Military Service: 1864, Lawrence County, Missouri. 14

On 30 Apr 1864, a John Anderson was enrolled as a Private in Co. A, 76th Regt., E.M.M. There is a question whether this is John Anderson, son of Richard and Martha, who had moved to Sebastian Co., AR prior to 1860, or the unrelated John F. Anderson who appears in the 1860 Census for Lawrence Co., MO. I suspect he is the son of Richard and Martha because both Green B(erry) Anderson and Zacharia T(aylor) Anderson were also in Company A, the latter being enrolled on the same day as John. These were the only Lawrence County Andersons in Company A. I speculate that after the Civil War began, John returned to Lawrence County to be with his family.

7 Dr. John Q. Anderson, "Anderson" (an unpublished preliminary family history) (College Station, Texas, December, 1959). Dr. John Q. Anderson was a son of Albert Slayton Anderson and a grandson of Green Berry Anderson. In December, 1959, Dr. Anderson, a professor at Texas A & M, wrote a preliminary family history for our Anderson family. It is a combination of family stories and family data. Since he was an accomplished scholar in the fields of english, history and folklore and since he wrote this history at a time when the events were closer in time and could be remembered by older family members, I generally defer to his data concerning names, dates and places. The stories, however, particularly the older ones, were probably not intended by Dr. Anderson to be factual. They are what they are -- memories -- which often wander from the facts as they are passed down from one generation to another. As a folklorist, Dr. Anderson knew the importance of recording the memories without regard to their factual accuracy. Dr. Anderson died February 1975. I am indebted to Helen Hill for sharing his work with me.
