bullet  Research Notes:

Larkin is believed to be a son of Elias Majors and Margaret Floyd, because he appears very near them in the 1830 census for Roane County, Tennessee. Elias in the only Majors in Roane County in 1830 who could be his father.

bullet  Birth Notes:

Larkin is generally reported to have been born about 1803, but no sources are cited. I have used the date extrapolated from the 1860-1880 censuses, because those are the only sources I know of. Note that he does not appear on any Roane County, Tennessee tax lists before 1830, so those are of no help in estimating when he was born.

bullet  Death Notes:

Larkin is variously reported as having died before 1880 or after 1880, but no sources are cited. I have used after 1880, because that is the last census record I have been able to find for him.

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

1. Census: 1830, Roane County, Tennessee. 3

Household of Larkin Majors:
1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30
1 female 20-30

[Location was that part of Roane County that was north of the Tennessee River. Three households above was Elias Majors.]

2. Census: 1840, Rhea County, Tennessee. 10

Household of Larkin Majors:
1 male 0-5, 3 males 5-10, 1 male 30-40
2 females 0-5, 1 female 30-40

3. Census: 1850, Rhea County, Tennessee. 6

Dwelling 60, Family 60, District 1
Larkin [Majors], age 47, male, farming, born in [Tn]
Elizabeth, age 50, female, born in [Tn], cannot read or write
John, age 17, male, born in [Tn]
Francis, age 15, male, born in [Tn]
Margaret, age 13, female, born in [Tn]
Mary, age 10, female, born in [Tn]
James, age 8, male, born in [Tn]
George, age 4, male, born in [Tn]

[Information within [ ] is not found in census. It appears the enumerator left items blank if there was no change, somewhat like the familiar Do (Ditto) practice. At Dwelling 59, Family 59 was Elias Majors, age 19, presumably Larkin's son.]

4. Census: 1860, Rhea County, Tennessee. 1

Dwelling 627, Family 627, District 1, Prestonville P. O.
Larkin Majors, age 54, male, $300 personal property, born in Tennessee
Betsy Majors, age 56 (?), female, born in Tennessee
James Majors, age 18, male, farmer, born in Tennessee
George Majors, age 14, male, farmer, born in Tennessee
Margaret Huddleston, age 21, female, born in Tennessee

5. Census: 1870, Roane County, Tennessee. 7

Dwelling 122, Family 120, District 12, Rock Wood P. O.
Majors, Larkin, age 66, male, white, farmer, born in Tennessee
---------, Elizabeth, age 68, female, white, keeping house, $100 personal property, born in Tennessee, cannot read or write
---------, George, age 4, male, white, born in Tennessee
---------, Johnson Ambros, age 26, male, white, ditcher, born in Tennessee
Ferguson, _has, age 30, male, white, ditcher, born in Tennessee

[Per the 1880 census, George is a grandson. Although the entry for Johnson Ambros is preceded by a dash, indicating he had the same surname as the head of household, I think that may have been a mistake. I think the last two entries were for unrelated laborers.]

6. Census: 1880, Roane County, Tennessee. 8

Dwelling 235, Family 235, District 12
Majors, Larkin, white, male, age 74, shoemaker, cannot write, born in Tennessee, father and mother born in Tennessee
Majors, Betsey, white, female, age 75, wife, keeping house, born in Tennessee, father and mother born in Tennessee
Majors, George, white, male, age 14, grandson, works on farm, born in Tennessee, father born in Tenn, mother born in Va

[The parents of George are not known, but I suspect they were George Majors and Anne Eliza Hickey. They were married in Roane Co. in 1866 and thus may have had a child born that year.]
