bullet  Research Notes:

Samuel Strong, Jr. was not listed by Jim Rolff as a child of Samuel Strong and Mary Adams. The subsequently discovered 1840 deed from Samuel Sr. to Samuel Jr. (see Events for Samuel Sr.) seems to establish him as one of their children.

Since Samuel Jr. was old enough to own land in 1840, that suggests a date of birth before 1820. He presumably died before the 1850 census. That census also provides evidence of a Strong family whose father had died. See household #689 headed by Elender Bozart, age 40, in which George H. Strong, age 18, and Mary P. Strong, age 17, are living. Mary P. Strong married James M. Pistole on 30 Oct 1850. As noted elsewhere, Mary Pistole Strong is an ancestor of the wife of Tommy Webb, the DeKalb County historian. Mr. Webb informed Jim Rolff that a Mr. Bozarth was the step-father of Mary P. Strong. If so, it would appear that Mr. Bozarth had died by 1850. It also appears, given the existence of Bozart/Bozarth children in Elender's household, ages 6-13, that Mr. Bozarth himself might have been a widower.

Might all this mean Elendar Bozart/Bozarth was the widow of Samuel Strong, Jr. and that George H. and Mary P. were their children? If so, that would mean Samuel was probably born about 1810. Note that the 1820 enumeration of Samuel Sr.'s family shows four male children age 0-10, so there seems to be room for Samuel Jr. being born in that time frame.

But, there is another potential widow Strong in the 1850 census, that being Elizabeth Strong, age 34, who was enumerated in household #702 headed by John E. Warren. Is she the widow of Samuel, or might she be the widow of another unidentified son of Samuel and Mary, or might she be a daughter of Samuel and Mary? It makes a neater package if she was an adult unmarried daughter of Samuel and Mary who was providing household services to the Warren family -- there appears to be room for her in the 1820 enumeration of Samuel Sr.'s family -- but such is nothing more than conjecture. Elizabeth married Thomas Leek/Leak on 29 Jun 1856. 1 2 3 4 5 6
