Daniel STRONG 1
Research Notes:
Jim Rolff stated that placing Daniel in Samuel's family was a wild guess. It was based on information sent him by Mark Cooper of Brazil, Indiana. Mark's ancestor was Louisa J. Strong, born 6 Feb 1815 in Indiana. Her father was Daniel Strong and was called "old Sam". His father was purportedly named Samuel Strong. Daniel married Amy Sier, who was born in North Carolina. Before moving to Indiana, Daniel had lived in Tennessee.
After Jim (i) confirmed the existence of a Siers family in Rockingham County, North Carolina, which records show had some connections to the Strongs of Rockingham County, (ii) found an 1811 court case involving a Daniel Strong in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where only the subject Samuel appears in any records after the 1780's, and (iii) determined that the subject Samuel was the only Samuel he knew of who was in Tennessee early enough for a son to have lived there and moved to Indiana by 1815, he tentatively listed him as a child of Samuel, probably the oldest child and maybe, if the 1811 court case involved this Daniel, a child by an earlier marriage.
Query whether factor (iii) is supported by the evidence. Note that William Strong was born in Virginia on 10 Oct 1814, leaving little time for Samuel and family to have moved thereafter to Smith County, and then for Daniel to have moved on to Indiana, where Louisa was born on 6 Feb 1815. Also, note that Martin Strong's obituary indicates Samuel and family may have moved to Tennessee as late as about 1820. The earliest record for Samuel in Smith County is as a witness to the deed whereby his brother, John, acquired property on Helton Creek. The date of that deed is difficult to make out; it looks like 1818, but could be 1816.
Those interested in this line should consult the additional detail contained in Jim's book. 2
