13. Military Service: 1861-1865, Cole County, Missouri. 16 17
During the Civil War, James was in several different state units that were aligned with the Union. The roster cards are confusing as to his record of service. As best as I can recreate it, his record of service during the Civil War was as follows:
From 17 Jun 1861 to 1 Oct 1861, he served in Co. E of the Cole County, Missouri Home Guard. He entered as a Private and rose to the rank of Captain.
On 7 Apr 1862, he enlisted and was mustered in as a Private in Co. E of 5th Regt. Cav. S. M. Vols. Co. He was discharged the very same day. [See the following entry which helps explain this one day event.]
On 7 Apr 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Co. E. of the 42nd Regiment Enrolled Mo. Militia. He was ordered into active service 14 Aug 1862 and relieved from duty 17 Nov 1862. But, another roster card shows him serving as a Major in the 42nd Reg't Enrolled Mo. Militia from 12 Sep 1862 to 17 Nov 1862. [Might the period of service for this second roster card actually have been for 1863? See the next entry.]
On 30 Oct 1863, per an order of discharge rather than from a roster card, he was discharged from the 42nd Regiment Enrolled Mo. Militia as a Major. [This discharge is difficult to reconcile with the roster cards. See the prior and following entries.]
On 29 Mar 1864, he was enrolled as a 2nd Lieut in the 42nd Regiment Enrolled Mo. Militia. [Why not as a Major, his prior rank?] He was ordered into active service on 30 Sep 1864. He was a Capt from 14 Aug to 11 Sep [1864?], when he was promoted to Major. No date of discharge is given.
Per the Cole County History, in 1865 he served as a 1st Lt. in the 25th Missouri Militia.
