There are conflicting sources for his date of birth (all of which were called to my attention by Bonnie Morris Conrad, a Merritt descendant, whose e-mail address is BONASHDAV@aol.com): his obituary in the Versailles Statesman says he was born 8 April 1837; his death notice in the Eldon Advertiser says he was born 26 April 1837; his tombstone says he was born 26 April 1837; and his death certificate says he was born 27 April 1837. The date listed on his birth certificate has been used because the informant was his widow, Barthenia.
Francis married Barthenia Jane MERRITT. (Barthenia Jane MERRITT was born on 7 Apr 1840 in Cole County, Missouri,6 died on 26 Jan 1929 in Morgan County, Missouri 6 and was buried on 28 Jan 1929 in Hopewell Cemetery, Morgan County, Missouri 6.)
