Austin FRANKLIN ¹

  Research Notes:

I have concluded Austin was the son of James because of his proximity to him in the tax lists and the 1830 census. In the 1825 tax list, James is the only possibility in the tax district where Austin makes his first appearance. In the 1830 census, James is the only possibility who appears on the same page as Austin. Also, James is the only one who married before his year of birth.

1826, Capt. Wm Thomas Company: Franklin, Oslin(?); 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $40.

1827, Capt. Elisha Franklin Company: Franklin, Oslin; 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $100.

1828: Franklin, Oslin; 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $60.

1829: Franklin, Austin; 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $50.

4. Tax List: 1830-1837, Wayne County, Kentucky. ⁵

1830: Franklin, Austin; 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $30.

1831-1832: Tax Lists missing.

1833: Franklin, Austin: 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $25.

1834: Franklin, Austin: 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $30.

1835: Franklin, Austin: 80 acres, B. C.; 1 voter, 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare; $80 total value. [Might Austin and James have been listed as owners of the same parcel? No deed to Austin has been found.]

1836: Franklin, Austin; 1 white male 21+.

1837: Franklin, Austin; 1 white male 21+; 1 horse/mare, $25. [This is the last year Austin's name appears on the Tax Lists.]

5. Census: 1850, Brown County, Indiana. ³

Household of Alfred Hicks: Austin Franklin, 40, M, Farmer, state of birth unknown.

[Mary appears to have died and the minor children are scattered. Daughter Melinda is in the household of George M. C. Keeny (Dwelling 111, Family 112) and daughter Rachel is in the household of Thomas V. Rash (Dwelling 119, Family 120).

Austin married Mary LAIR, daughter of Rev. James LEAR and Sarah HAMILTON. (Mary LAIR was born in 1805-1810 in Wayne County, Kentucky ⁷ and died about 1848 in Indiana ⁸.)
