Per Frank Thomas, who met with William Shipman in 1979 shortly before he died, William was not a son, but a grandson of William T. and Sarah Shipman. His father was John S. Shipman.

Sarah married William T. SHIPMAN on 4 Mar 1852 in Lawrence County, Missouri.¹ (William T. SHIPMAN was born on 13 Dec 1829 in Tennessee,^{2 8 9} died on 11 Mar 1899 in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (Fanshawe, Le Flore County, Oklahoma) ⁹ and was buried in Fanshawe, Le Flore County, Oklahoma ⁹.)
