John W. SATTERFIELD 1
- Born: Abt 1845, Tennessee 2
- Marriage: Margaret M. MAJORS on 3 Jan 1866 in Grainger County, Tennessee 1
- Buried: Liberty Hill Cemetery, Grainger County, Tennessee 3
Research Notes:
See the discussion of the 1880 census for the possibility of more children having been born of this marriage.
Burial Notes:
Cemetery transcription shows his name as J. W. Satterfield and lists his military service as Co A, 12th Tenn Cav.
Noted events in his life were:
1. Census: 1870, Grainger County, Tennessee. 2
Dwelling 36, Family 36, 12th Civil District, Clear Springs P.O. Satterfield, John, age 25, male, white, farm laborer, born in Tennessee, cannot write Satterfield, Margaret, age 25, female, white, keeping house, born in Tennessee, cannot read or write Satterfield, Phebe, age 10, female, white, born in Tennessee, cannot read or write Satterfield, James, age 9, male, white, born in Tennessee Satterfield, Manerva, age 3, female, white, born in Tennessee
[Phebe and James were born several years before John and Margaret married and thus it seems unlikely the latter were the parents of the former. While it's possible they could be John's children from a prior marriage or relationship, that seems doubtful given he would have been only 15 when Phebe was born. Although Margaret may also have been only 15 (this census may have understated her age), it seems more likely these were her children born out of wedlock, particularly since this was not uncommon among the young Majors women. Also, it seems Phebe was probably named after Margaret's mother. Since it appears Phebe and James took the Satterfield name, I have listed them as children of this marriage, although they probably weren't.]
2. Census: 1880, Grainger County, Tennessee. 4
This family is not found in the 1880 census, at least not intact. There is a Phebe Satterfield, age 20, who is an unrelated member of the Peter Beeler household (Dwelling 17, Family 17, E. D. 101, page 10) and who has a child named Henry, age 3 mos. There is also a John Satterfield, age 30, who is an unrelated member of the Robert Beeler household (Dwelling 11, Family 11, E. D. 101, page 18) and could possibly be the subject John. If so, then Margaret has died after having three more children: Mary V., born about 1872; Cordia A., born about 1874; and Daniel N., born about 1878. Pending positive identification of this John as the husband of Margaret Majors, I have not listed these as their children. Neither James nor Manerva of the 1870 census were found in the 1880 census.
John married Margaret M. MAJORS, daughter of Thomas MAJORS and Phebe LEFFEW, on 3 Jan 1866 in Grainger County, Tennessee.1 (Margaret M. MAJORS was born in 1842-1845 in Grainger County, Tennessee 2 5 6 and died after 1870 2.)
