Jacob BOWER ¹

  Research Notes:

Jacob Bower of Marion County, Missouri is thought to be a brother of the other Bowers tentatively identified as sons of Andrew Bowers (Sr.), because (i) he was born in Virginia, (ii) his approximate date of birth is consistent with the initial tax list appearance of Jacob Bower in Grainger County, Tennessee, where Andrew (Sr.), William, Andrew (Jr.), John and Henry Bowers lived at the time, and (iii) the younger Jacob Bower who appears with him in the 1860-1880 censuses was the son of David Bowers of Shelby County, Indiana. ⁷

[Earlier census records for Jacob have not been found, although he is suspected to have been enumerated in the household of Henry Bowers in the 1830 census for Grainger County, Tennessee.]

[Although there are discrepancies in places of birth, these two Jacobs appear to be the same two Jacobs that are enumerated in Marion County, Missouri in later censuses. As discussed elsewhere, the younger Jacob was the son of David Bowers of Shelby County, Indiana. Note that Mary A. Bowers and children were also enumerated in the 1860 census for Shelby County, Indiana. The Schuyler census was taken on 16 Jul 1860 and the Shelby census was taken on 29 Jun 1860. While she may have been in each place on those respective dates, I rather doubt it. I suspect Mary had returned to Indiana for the birth of their third child, who was about a month old at the time of the Shelby County enumeration, and that since she was only temporarily gone her husband provided the enumerator in Schuyler County with the names of his wife and children. It appears he may not even have known that their third child had been born.]

Jacob married Jane HARDIN on 3 May 1865. (Jane HARDIN was born on 22 Dec 1833 in Missouri ⁹ and died on 12 Sep 1905 ⁹.)

  Marriage Notes:

Jane was previously married to ____ Henton. One would expect Jacob to have been previously married, but no evidence of such a marriage or children by an earlier marriage has been found. Indeed, the lack of any previous family may explain why his nephew moved from Shelby County, Indiana to be with him.
