Ellen LEFFEW
(Abt 1820-) |
Ellen LEFFEW 1Research Notes: It appears that Ellen Leffew and Sarah Leffew, who both fill slots in the 1830 household of Joseph Leffew, were enumerated in a separate household in 1840 from that of Joseph's widow, Sarah (Majors) Leffew. That was probably because they were not her children, but instead children by his previous wives. However, no other records have been found for Ellen, so the only connection to Joseph is the 1840 census and the otherwise unaccounted for slot in Joseph's 1830 household. This suggests Ellen may have been Joseph's daughter, but as with the other children in the 1830 census there is no evidence of Ellen's involvement in the administration of Joseph's estate, particularly the disposition of his land. Then again, that seems to have been the case with some other children as well, so that fact may not mean much in trying to determine whether Ellen was Joseph's daughter. Birth Notes: On the assumption that Ellen was one of the female free colored children age 0-10 in the Joseph's 1830 household, then she must have been 20 in 1840 for her to be enumerated in the 20-29 age range. Noted events in her life were: 1. Census: 1840, Grainger County, Tennessee. 1 |
