He is listed as having been married 8 years, but is not shown as a widower. Also listed in the household is Harriet Mayjors, age 11, who was born May 1899, which was 5 months after they married. Does the use of the Majors name indicate Harriet was not his child? That she is in the care of William suggests Rettie may have died after 8 years of marriage, or about 1897. That would be consistent with the 1900 census record for her mother, which indicates two of her children had by then died.
