Thomas M. Lear has been listed as a child of John Lear, Jr. and his wife Jemima for two reasons: (1) when Thomas makes his first appearance on the Culpeper County, Virginia tax lists in 1794, presumably at or near the age of 21, he is listed in the same tax district as John Lear (Jr.), who at that time was the only Lear in Culpeper County old enough to be his father; and (2) Thomas named a son Jesse and named daughters Fanny and Levinah, all names of children of John Lear, Jr. (For tax list information, see Events for John Lear, Jr.)
Those interested in this family would be well advised to obtain a copy of the transcription of the family bible from the DAR. Note, however, that prior to Thomas M. Lear, the information appears to be have come from the DAR Application of Mildred Pamelia Dobson Cosgriff, which I have demonstrated is faulty in most respects.
William Lear, of Learjet fame, is a descendant of Thomas' son, Jesse.
