Declaration of Hannah Lear:
State of Virginia Fauquier County
"On this thirtyeth day of July Eighteen-hundred and thirty Eight, personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace in the County aforesaid, Hannah Lear, a resident of the said County aged Seventy one years, who, being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress, passed July 7th, 1838 entitled 'An act granting half-pay and pensions to certain Widows.' That she is the widow of William Lear, who was a private in Captain Roger's Company of Cavalry in the Illinois Regiment, Commanded by Col [George Rogers] Clark. She further declares she was married to the said William Lear on the [left blank, although an official letter in the pension file notes their marriage license was dated August 8, 1787] day of August Seventeen hundred and Eighty Seven in the County of Fauquier aforesaid by the Rev. Parson Thompson; that her husband the aforesaid William Lear died on the fifteenth day of February, Eighteen hundred and Sixteen; that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January Seventeen hundred and Ninety-four [apparently the cutoff date for widow's benefits], viz. at the time above stated."

Certificate of Pension issued 1 July 1848 to Hannah Lear, widow of William Lear, who served in the Revolutionary War from Virginia as a private in the Calvary. Inscribed on the Roll in Richmond, Virginia, at the rate of $100 per annum, to commence 4 Mar 1848. Recorded on Roll of Pensioners at Page 163, Vol. 3.
