Research Notes: John only appears on the 1789 tax list, but under circumstances which strongly suggests he is a previously unidentifed son. Although it's possible he is the Boston Bowers of subsequent tax lists, it is also possible he left Berkeley County soon after he became 21. Pending further evidence, I have decided to treat John and Boston as different persons. Birth Notes: It is not clear whether in 1789 John had to be 21 to be taxable. That was the case in 1787, but by 1790 males were taxable if they were over age 16. My notes for the years 1788 and 1789 are not clear as to what the rules were that year. Since John appears on the 1789 tax list under his own name, I have assumed he turned 21 that year. Noted events in his life were: 1. Tax List: 1789, Berkeley County, (West) Virginia. 1 |
