Ruth ROE NEE BLANEY

Ruth married Moses LEAR, son of Unknown and Sarah LEAR, on 8 Oct 1847 in Morgan County, Indiana.¹ (Moses LEAR was born about 1799 in Kentucky ² and died after 1850 in Morgan County, Indiana ².)

  Marriage Notes:

Moses had obviously been married before. There are two possibilities, either or both of which might have involved Moses, son of Sarah. The analysis is complicated by the fact Sarah also had a brother named Moses.

The first possibility is the marriage of Moses Lair and Polly Mayden in Madison Co., KY. The bondsman was George Lambert and the bond was dated 5 Oct 1818. No consents were noted and no return was filed. [See Vockery compilation of Madison Co., KY marriage records.] Since the 1820 enumeration of Moses, son of Sarah, shows no females in his household, it would seem, unless Polly had died, that it was most likely Moses, Sarah's brother, who married Polly Mayden.

The second possibility is the marriage of Moses Lair to Nancy Gentry on 30 Apr 1824 in Madison Co., KY. [See IGI.] No other information is provided to help determine which Moses was involved. If Moses, Sarah's brother, married Polly Mayden, then maybe it was Moses, Sarah's son, who married Nancy Gentry.

Of course, it is possible both marriages were for one or the other Moses. Further research into Morgan Co., IN records might reveal the name of his (Moses, son of Sarah) prior wife.
