bullet  Noted events in his life were:

1. Court: 1801-1803, Wayne County, Kentucky. 6

June Court, 1801 at page 9: Wm Hamilton, Certificate No. 99 for 200 acres.

August Court, 1802 at page 37: Wm Hamilton relinquished his claim to Certificate No. 99.

December Court, 1803 at page 65: Brents vs. Hambleton on appeal. [Although the particulars of this lawsuit are not set forth, including the given name of the Hambleton involved, the contemporaneous Bill of Sale set forth below suggests the defendant may have been William and that the sale may have been necessary to satisfy an adverse judgment. Another possibility, depending on the adequacy of the consideration received, is that the sale was intended to make him judgment proof.]

2. Tax List: 1802-1806, Wayne County, Kentucky. 5

[Prior to 1802: Based on his year of birth (as extrapolated from information provided by his brother, Joseph, in the 1839 deposition given in connection with his mother's pension application), one would have expected William to show up on a tax list in 1800 or 1801. During those years, the family lived in Garrard Co., KY. He does not appear on any Garrard Co. tax list. His initial appearance on the 1802 tax list for Wayne Co. suggests he could have been born 1780-1781.]

1802: Hambleton, Wm; 1 white male 21+

1803: Hambleton, Wm; 1 white male 21+; 3 horse/mare

1804: No entry

1805: Unreadable

1806: Wife listed on 27 June, indicating William had died between the date of his marriage and the date of the 1806 tax entry for his wife.

3. Bill of Sale: 1803, Wayne County, Kentucky. 7

Dated 14 Dec 1803, Recorded 14 Dec 1803, Bk A:90
William Hamilton to John Hamilton, "one bay mare & sorrel horse & saddle, one cow & calf & 11 head of hogs & crib of corn & one rifle gun & my cloes and all I possess for value received." Wit: James Lear, Joseph Henry.

[One does not normally sell all that one possesses. See the court action the same month for a possible explanation.]

William married Elizabeth COTTON on 21 Feb 1805 in Wayne County, Kentucky.1

bullet  Marriage Notes:

"Hamilton, William and Eliza "Betsy" Cotton (Whitecotton?). Surety, Samuel Allen. Married 21 Feb 1805 by Nicholas Loyd."

[It is unknown why Bork raised the possibility Elizabeth's surname was Whitecotton. There is neither a Cotton family nor a Whitecotton family in the 1810 census for Wayne Co., KY.] 1
