bullet  General Notes:

Aunt Ruby (Ruby Bowers McAndrew) remembered her great-grandparents as being named Philip Anderson and Margaret Powell. Philip was obviously just a generational mixup. Margaret is close enough to Martha to be considered to be on target. Thus, it is quite possible Martha's maiden name was Powell. However, I have not been able to document this.

2 Dr. John Q. Anderson, "Anderson" (an unpublished preliminary family history) (College Station, Texas, December, 1959). Dr. John Q. Anderson was a son of Albert Slayton Anderson and a grandson of Green Berry Anderson. In December, 1959, Dr. Anderson, a professor at Texas A & M, wrote a preliminary family history for our Anderson family. It is a combination of family stories and family data. Since he was an accomplished scholar in the fields of english, history and folklore and since he wrote this history at a time when the events were closer in time and could be remembered by older family members, I generally defer to his data concerning names, dates and places. The stories, however, particularly the older ones, were probably not intended by Dr. Anderson to be factual. They are what they are -- memories -- which often wander from the facts as they are passed down from one generation to another. As a folklorist, Dr. Anderson knew the importance of recording the memories without regard to their factual accuracy. Dr. Anderson died February 1975. I am indebted to Helen Hill for sharing his work with me.
