Census records and War of 1812 records contain conflicting years of birth, as exptrapolated from the stated ages in such records. Per the 1860 census, his year of birth was c1782. Per the 1870 census, his year of birth was c1785. Per his 1850 Oath of Service, his year of birth was c1785. Per his 1852 Declaration for Bounty Land, his year of birth was c1787. Per his 1855 Declaration for additional Bounty Land, his year of birth was c1793. Per his 1871 Declaration for a Pension, his year of birth was c1786. It seems most likely his year of birth was 1785-1787.

Josiah Lephew of Rockingham County sold Lot No. 4 on waters of Whetstone Creek and Dan River, which descended to him in 1801 in accordance with an agreed upon division of the land of his father, Stephen Lephew, Dec'd, to George Carter of Rockingham County for $40. Witnessed by Alex Sneed and Thomas Carter.

2. Military Service: 1813-1814, Virginia. 5

During the War of 1812, Josiah Leffew was a Private in Capt. Julian Maggano's Co., Lt. Col. Francis Preston's 5th Regt., Virginia Militia, from 8 Sep 1813 to 10 Mar 1814. On account of such service he was awarded Bounty Land (Warrants 46,407 and 52,351) and a Pension (Application 21,286 and Certificate 21,480).
