bullet  General Notes:

Bruce Philp related a fascinating story to me about the serendipitous discovery of the grave of Charles H. Hamilton, which is worth sharing:

"About 1983 I was in Missouri on business. I obtained a circa 1880 plat map of Vienna (Economy), Macon Co., MO at the state records in Jefferson City. It showed the farm owned by my gr-gr grandmother, Malissa Hardgrove, Charles' widow. My cousin (who lives in the area) and I decided to go visit the four cemeteries shown on the old plat map to identify as many Hamiltons and Hardgroves as we could. Two of the cemeteries were well known and we scoured them, making note of all Hamilton and Hardgrove graves. We found Malissa Hardgrove Hamilton's grave (she died 28 Feb 1885), but no Charles. We found a third cemetery had apparently been removed or destroyed and is now a farmer's alfalfa field. No idea what happened to the graves. We looked for the fourth cemetery which, according to the map, was adjacent to the old Hamilton farm. The present owner's wife met our car with a shotgun (no less) and considerable suspicion, wanting to know what the hell we were doing on her property. After we explained, she said her grown retarded son had mentioned playing around some graves in the woods back of the farm, but she'd never seen them, even though she had lived there for over 30 years.

My cousin and I took off down a trail on foot. The woods were quite extensive (at least 300 acres) and we had no idea where the graves might be, if indeed there were any, or which way to walk. We decided to take a wild stab and at an arbitrary point halfway down the trail, we turned at a right angle to the trail and walked into the woods for about 200 yards. We walked into a clearing (not visible from the trail) and found the sun's rays shining through the trees directly on two graves . . . those of Charles H. Hamilton (26 Oct 1805 - 14 Oct 1855) and his eldest son, John S. Hamilton (10 May 1830 - 19 Aug 1851). There were no other graves . . . only those two! Talk about a spooky and very spiritual experience! I still get chills thinking about it. It certainly seemed like we were meant to find the graves." 4

bullet  Research Notes:

The 29 Oct 1821 deed by which the heirs of Charles Hamilton, Dec'd, conveyed a portion of his land to the Trustees of The Methodist Episcopal Church is generally relied upon as evidencing the children of Charles and Hannah. Charles H. Hamilton is the only child who did not participate in this deed, presumably because he was barely age 16.

It also appears that Charles H. moved to Pulaski County before 1826, the year he turned age 21, since he does not appear in the tax records until he moved back about 1833.

I find it interesting that when he returned to Wayne County, he was already prosperous, quite a feat for a young man with no inheritance. Bruce Philp suspects he had financial backing from his in-laws. 6

2 Letter from Mary (Hamilton) Allen, Monticello, Wayne Co., Kentucky, to her brothers and sisters in Indiana, dated January 3, 1853, Copy of original and transcription in possession of author. Transcriber believed to be Edna Stockton, "[W]e heard from brother Charles Hamilton and brother Joseph and they and their famileys was well" [Both Charles H. Hamilton and Joseph H. Hamilton appear in the 1850 census for Macon Co., MO.]

3 Family Records of Edna Stockton, Letter dated 10 Dec 1883 from Edna Stockton to Allene W. Schnaiter. Edna Stockton (1893-1992) was a descendant of Charles Hamilton and Hannah Henry as follows: James H. Hamilton and Hannah Francis > John Francis Hamilton and Mildred Lloyd Ferguson > James Edward Hamilton and Sarah E. Clodfelder > Dee Edna Hamilton who married Thomas Stockton. Besides her first hand knowledge of many Indiana descendants, which made her an invaluable resource for subsequent generations, she was probably also the source for much of the oral history about Charles Hamilton. Particularly valuable are certain letters she had in her possession that were written by Hannah Henry Hamilton and Mary "Polly" Hamilton Allen to her great-grandfather, which are revealing of their lives and times and which Edna shared with later Hamilton descendants.
