1. Robert GRAY

Mary Jane STRONG 1

  • Born: 1834-1837, Cole County, Missouri 4 5 6 7
  • Marriage (1): Robert GRAY on 31 Oct 1852 in Cole County, Missouri 1
  • Marriage (2): Jackson COURTRIGHT on 8 Aug 1865 in Cole County, Missouri 2 3
  • Died: 11 Feb 1912, Arcata, Humboldt County, California 8

bullet  Birth Notes:

I suspect she was born Jul 1834, which would be the date found in the 1900 census less 1O years. That would mean she was born 14 months after her older brother, Eli. But, since her younger brother, Andy, was born about 1838, the other years of birth for Mary, as extrapolated from census records, are within the range of possibility.

bullet  Noted events in her life were:

1. Census: 1840, Cole County, Missouri. 9

Household of Hiram Strong: Presumed to be the female age 5-10.

2. Census: 1850, Newton County, Missouri. 4

Household of Hiram Strong: Mary Strong, age 14, female, born in Missouri.

3. Census: 1860, Cole County, Missouri. 10

Household of Robert Gray: Mary, age 21, female, born In Missouri.

[Note that Mary's age of 21 is presumably incorrect since it is inconsistent with her age in the 1840 and 1850 censuses and would mean she married at age 13.]

4. Census: 1870, Cole County, Missouri. 5

Household of Jackson Cortwright: Cortwright, Mary Jane, age 35, female, white, house keeping, born in Kentucky

[Mary Jane, of course, was born in Missouri]

5. Census: 1880, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. 6

Household of Jackson Courtright:
Courtright, Jane, white, female, age 43, wife, married, keeping house, cannot write, born in Mo, father born in Ill, mother born in Tenn

6. Census: 1900, Humboldt County, California. 7

Household of Jackson Courtright:
Courtright, Mary J., wife, white, female, born Jul 1844, age 55, married 35 years, born in Missouri, father born in Missouri, mother born in Missouri, can read, write and speak English

[Clearly, Mary's date of birth is wrong. Might it have been Jul 1834?]

Mary married Robert GRAY on 31 Oct 1852 in Cole County, Missouri.1 (Robert GRAY was born about 1832 in Missouri 10.)

Mary next married Jackson COURTRIGHT on 8 Aug 1865 in Cole County, Missouri.3 8 (Jackson COURTRIGHT was born in 1827-1836 in possibly Dearborn County, Indiana 8 and died on 3 Sep 1902 in Arcata, Humboldt County, California 8.)
