bullet  General Notes:

William Strong was a steamboat captain on the Cumberland River. See the photograph of him, courtesy of Dale Craymer of Austin, Texas, a great-great grandson, on my webpage for collateral Strong ancestors. 4

bullet  Research Notes:

Jim Rolff concluded William Strong was the son of Samuel, because he appeared in Samuel's household in the 1850 census for DeKalb County, Tennessee, and because he was born in Virginia. More details and records are included in Jim's book.

As I do on occasion, I depart here from my general practice of not including second cousins in my database. The reason in this case is that the identification of William's children helps to determine which of the children in the 1850 census for DeKalb County were his and which were Samuel's. Also, I feel it is important to provide the information from the William Strong Family Bible, because it provides a somewhat different and presumably more accurate and complete account of William's family from that in Jim Rolff's book. 2 4

bullet  Birth Notes:

Jim Rolff gives the year of birth as 1815, while the William Strong Family Bible gives it as 1814.

1 William Strong Family Bible. This bible is in the possession of Dale Craymer of Austin, Texas (dcraymer@austin.rr.com). It passed from William's daughter, Ida Strong Doss, with whom he lived after his retirement, to her daughter, Lillian Doss Craymer, who in turn passed it to her grandson, Dale. Dale was kind enough to provide me with the bible's vital dates, as well as photographs of William.
