6. Estate Administration: 1859-1865, Cole County, Missouri. 3 6 7

[The Estate Administration records raise several questions about the finances of Marcelmus Barry. For example, it is unclear how Marcelmus acquired so many assets at such a young age. Inheritance does not seem the answer, because the estate of his father was modest. While the debts presented against his estate suggest some borrowing to leverage assets, there appears to have been a substantial net worth. While a subsequent correction to the inventory of his estate for notes belonging to another -- query how such a mistake could have been made -- cut his intangible personal property nearly in half, what remained was still a substantial estate. However, claims against the estate exceeded the proceeds from the sale of his tangible personal property and so ultimately real estate had to be sold to satisfy these claims. Without Settlement records, which appear not to exist for this period of time, it is difficult to determine what was ultimately collected from the remaining intangible personal property, how much of the proceeds from the sale of real property was not used to pay debts, and how much was ultimately available for distribution to his heirs.]
